Many people think that if they just lower their caloric intake, they will lose weight and keep it off. Many people try exercising a mere 15 minutes per day, but still eat what they want when they want, and expect to lose weight. All the examples above are myths. Yes, I am sure that there have been people who diet excessively and lose weight, but is it a smart way to lose weight? Is it a healthy way to lose weight? Does the weight stay off or are they one of the largest yo-yos without a string?
If you really want to lose fat (lose weight) in a smart, healthy way, keep it off and feel great, you have to combine all the important elements all at once. These elements are the habit of smart exercise along with the habit of good, healthy eating. Habit, in this instance, means to have a “lifestyle” of smart exercise and healthy eating.
At this time, I will only talk about the habit of smart exercise and what changes are needed in order to lose fat effectively and keep it off. The habit of good healthy eating is for another time.
For simplicity sake, there are two major components that all exercise falls under: Cardio and Weight Training. Basically, cardio gets your heart rate up. When you get your heart rate up, more blood is pumped throughout the body, carrying more oxygen through the bloodstream to the muscles, helping the muscles to work. When muscles work, energy is being burned. That energy is in the form of calories and/or stored fat. That burning of calories/stored fat is a good thing and is exactly what we want to occur.

When weight training, muscle fibers are being broken down or torn. On the days there is no weight training, muscles are building back up or recovering. That is why weight training should not done everyday. There should be at least a 24 hour rest in between weight training days. This constant building back up or recovering increases lean muscle mass. That building up is a good thing because when there is an increase in lean muscle mass, the body will burn additional calories/stored fat. Also, the more muscle, the more calories/stored fat the body will burn, even when the body is at rest. Burning calories/stored fat while sleeping is a good deal for us! If the body has a lot of fat and very little muscle or a low metabolism, it will not burn as many calories because fat does not burn calories, it’s just there. Having a low metabolism means that the body needs more lean muscle to burn as many calories as possible during the day, every day. Having a high metabolism essentially means that the body has a good amount of lean muscle mass so the body burns more calories during the day, everyday.
